ISTANBUL, May 23 (KUNA) -- A UN official announced Monday that a new international center for humanitarian data is set to open in the Netherlands by early 2017.
The center, backed by the Dutch foreign ministry, will assist in finding new solutions for challenges, and in using data effectively in times of crises, Stephen O'Brien, UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said.
O'Brien made his remarks while addressing the attendants of "The Future of Humanitarian Data - Opportunities and Challenges" event, held on the sidelines of the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul.
Accurate data are very significant in understanding and meeting the needs of those affected by crises and disasters around the world, O'Brien said, adding that his office plays a vital and important role in data gathering with cooperation of UN bodies and partners.
The main aim is to create a joint understanding and practical assistance for the decision making process in all levels, he noted, adding that the new center will be part of the Centre for Innovation that was formed in Hague.
The center will combine the UN, NGOs, private sectors, and academics all in one cooperative environment. (end)
