GCC, Canada assert importance of peace in Yemen

JEDDAH, May 23 (KUNA) -- Foreign Ministers of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countrie and Canada underlined Monday importance of achieving progress in UN-sponsored Kuwait-hosted talks among the Yemeni parties.
The ministers, in a final communique following their strategic dialogue, welcomed the ceasefire in Yemen and urged all parties to abide by the cessation of hostilities.
They underscored support for the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmad in his efforts to seal a deal among the warring parties in line with UN resolution 2216, the GCC initiative and implementation mechanism, and the outcome of national dialogue.
They called for the protection of civilians and providing of humanitarian aid for the needy Yemenis "as soon as possible to alleviate their suffering." Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Nezar Madani chaired the meeting because his country held the rotating presidency of the GCC. (pickup previous) nh.bs
