LONDON, May 6 (KUNA) -- Labour's Sadiq Khan is set to be named London mayor tomorrow, Saturday, breaking the Conservatives' eight-year hold on City Hall.
With the final votes still being counted, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn led congratulations from the party's MPs, as broadcasters calculated that Khan had built up a mathematically unassailable lead over his nearest rival conservative's rival Zac Goldsmith.
Final confirmation of Khan's victory was delayed by several hours due to counting "discrepancies."
Although the result has yet to be declared he got 44.2 percent of first preference votes to Goldsmith's 35.6 percent - second preference votes are now being counted with Khan set to pass the crucial 50 percent mark when they are added in.
The result had been due to be announced early this evening but has now been delayed, with organisers London Elects saying they are "working towards a declaration at midnight".
A London Elects spokeswoman said: "The returning officer is currently updating candidates and agents. There were some small discrepancies with regard to the mayoral figures and we have to take the time to check them."
"We're doing the checking in conjunction with the Electoral Commission. We have to take the time to resolve these issues. We are working towards a declaration at midnight," she added. (end)
