NATO agrees to Kuwait mission

BRUSSELS, May 4 (KUNA) -- NATO announced Wednesday that it has agreed to accept the request of the State of Kuwait to designate the Embassy of the State of Kuwait to Belgium as Mission to NATO.
The Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to Belgium will therefore be the Head of the Mission of the State of Kuwait to NATO, noted the Alliance in a statement.
"The State of Kuwait is a very active member of NATO's Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, established in 2004," it said.
NATO's Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, launched at the Alliance's Summit in the Turkish city in 2004, aims to contribute to long-term global and regional security by offering countries of the Arab Gulf bilateral security cooperation with NATO.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed closer cooperation between the Alliance and Kuwait during his first official visit to Kuwait last February.
Speaking at the site of the future NATO-Kuwait Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) Regional Centre, Stoltenberg praised Kuwait's commitment and vision in bringing NATO closer to the Gulf region.
NATO also agreed today to accept the request of Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan to designate their embassies as missions to NATO. (end) nk.mt
