Preliminary results show reformists winning Iranian parliament run-off

TEHRAN, April 30 (KUNA) -- Unofficial preliminary results showed moderate and centrist allies of Iran's reformist President Hassan Rouhani winning the second round of parliamentary elections, taking more than 30 of the 68 seats up for grabs.
Iranian local media reported conservatives, on the other hand, are credited with just 22 seats.
If the trend is confirmed, it would be a further vote of confidence in Rouhani after big reformist gains in February's first round of polling.
The candidates are competing to secure seats for 55 constituencies in which no candidate achieved a clear majority during the February's general elections.
The current parliament is dominated by allies of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Yesterday, people voted on 68 undecided seats in constituencies where candidates failed to get 25 percent of votes cast in the first round.
The new 290-member assembly will begin its session on May 27.
About 17 million voters are eligible to go to the ballot boxes for the run-off elections across the country. (end) mw.mb
