NEW YORK, April 21 (KUNA) -- The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) concluded on Thursday a three-day special session on the world drug problem.
The debates focused on the progress made towards achieving goals set in the 2009 policy document titled "Political Declaration and Plan of Action on International Cooperation towards an Integrated and Balanced Strategy to Counter the World Drug Problem." Kuwait's delegation to the event was led by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior Lt.-Gen. Suleiman Al-Fahad.
Speaking to KUNA this evening, Lt.-Gen. Al-Fahad said the session provided a platform for law enforcement agencies around the globe to share experiences on the best practices in addressing the global menace of illicit drugs.
"To eradicate this problem requires a firm resolve and a collective effort by the international community," he pointed out.
"The combat against illicit trade in narcotics needs also to take an unconventional approach amid the changes and developments around the globe," he said, noting that no country can do so alone whatever its resources and capacities might be.
Lt.-Gen. Al-Fahad commended the role of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) for its primary role in drug control matters and coordinating the preparatory process for the UNGA special session (UNGASS).
The preparatory process includes substantive consultations with UN entities and agencies, relevant international and regional organizations, civil society and other relevant stakeholders.
The UNGASS consisted of a general debate and five interactive, multi-stakeholder roundtables on: demand reduction; supply reduction; human rights, women and children; new challenges; and alternative development. (end) mao.gb
