US welcomes Libyan Presidential Council arrival in Tripoli

WASHINGTON, March 30 (KUNA) -- The US on Wednesday hailed the earlier arrival of Libya's Presidential Council in Tripoli as an opportunity for the launch of a Government of National Accord, which can begin addressing the full range of Libya's challenges.
"The Libyan people, supported by the United States and our partners in the international community, have worked toward this moment for nearly two years," Secretary of State John Kerry said in a press statement.
"The Government of National Accord can now begin the crucial work of addressing the full range of Libya's political, security, economic, and humanitarian challenges," he added.
Members of Libya's internationally-backed Presidential Council have arrived in Tripoli by ship from Tunisia.
They defied attempts by the self-declared government in the city to keep them out and prevent them from installing a unity government.
Kerry reiterated calls by the Libyan Political Dialogue and the international community "for all Libyan public institutions to facilitate and support a peaceful and orderly transition in the capital." He also urged Libyans to support the Government of National Accord.
"Now is not the time for obstructionists to hold back progress, but rather for all Libyans throughout the country to embrace this historic opportunity for a peaceful and more prosperous Libya," he concluded. (end) sd.hb
