Kuwaiti activists stress importance to integrate disabled

DOHA, March 8 (KUNA) -- Two Kuwaiti activists in the field of disabilities called Tuesday for benefiting from successful international experiences in empowering people with disabilities to be active individuals in their societies.
They stressed on importance of overcoming difficulties and improving services provided to people with disabilities as well as including them in development projects, the activists told KUNA in statements on sideline of the Doha second international conference about problems of the deaf and blind (dual disability).
The deputy chairperson of Kuwait society to follow up on people with special needs, Kholud Al-Ali, said the association works to improve services provided for the handicapped, in accordance with highest levels that keep pace "with our modern era." She stressed on importance of raising community awareness about people with disability issues and defending their cause as well as correcting misconceptions that affect their rights.
The dual disability conference comes within the Arab and Gulf efforts to integrate people with disabilities into the society in order to achieve their participation as active citizens, she said.
On her part, treasurer of the association Abeer Al-Jammaz said, the conference will contribute to the exchange of experience with experts, academics and parents of handicapped people with disabilities on a number of emerging issues on the Arab arena and obstacles hindering their integration into the community.
The conference included a presentation about many innovative technologies to help this segment overcome communication difficulties, she said.
The three-day conference that started on march 6 was organized by the Arab Union for the Blind (AUB), with participation of representatives of civil society organizations and governments in addition to a number of experts from Qatar, Arab and foreign countries and the World Federation of the Deaf and the Blind.
