IS trying to attract as many foreign fighters to Libya as possible - US envoy

WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (KUNA) -- The so-called Islamic State (IS) is "trying to attract as many foreign fighters to Libya as possible," US Special Envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter IS Brett McGurk said Tuesday.
"Its own open source propaganda in Dabiq Magazine is now telling people, hey, don't go into the caliphate in Syria, come to Libya... And it's trying to project attacks outwards, as we've seen in Tunisia," said McGurk to reporters.
He described Libya as a "different situation" because it doesn't have the "sectarian dynamic" compared to Iraq and Syria. Instead it, "eliminates all competitors" and tries to attract foreign fighters to the country through the migrant flow in Africa.
"The sequence of events in Libya that we want to see is to have a Libyan political process completed, and we're hoping to have a vote in the Libyan parliament to approve the new government of national accord," noted McGurk. (end) ak.hb
