Bulgaria's Irina Bokova nominated for UN chief

NEW YORK, Feb 11 (KUNA) -- Bulgaria has officially nominated the current Director-General of UNESCO Irina Bokova as a candidate for the position of the United Nations Secretary-General.
Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Daniel Mitov informed the United Nations about the Bulgarian government decision nominating Bokova.
In his letter, Bulgarian minister said that the candidate has extensive professional experience and leadership skills as a longtime politician and diplomat with proven competence in the field of multilateral diplomacy and international relations.
The nomination comes in line with General Assembly (GA) resolution 69/321, a joint letter from both the GA and Security Council was distributed in December 2015 to begin soliciting candidates and to set in motion the process of selecting the next UN Secretary General.
This is in accordance with the provisions of Article 97 of the Charter of the United Nations and guided by the principles of transparency and inclusivity.
The position of Secretary General is one of great importance that requires the highest standards of efficiency, competence and integrity, and a firm commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
Since December, four candidates other than Bokova, were nominated by their countries competing for the Secretary General position. Croatia also nominated in January another female candidate. (end) mao.gb
