Egypt court mitigates death sentences for 8 convicts over "Suez Canal case"

CAIRO, Feb 6 (KUNA) -- An Egyptian court has reduced death sentences on eight convicts to 10 years in prison in the retrial of a case related to plans to attack the Suez Canal, it officially reported on Saturday.
They were among 26 defendants who had been sentenced to death for several charges, mainly planning attacks on ships passing through the Suez Canal, and manufacturing missiles and explosives.
They are also charged with establishing a "terrorist" group that includes cells in several governorates with the aim of launching attacks against vital facilities in the country.
The "Suez Canal Case" goes back to 2010 when 27 people were charged with planning attacks on the Suez Canal. They were released due to lack of evidence, but they were referred back to court in November 2013. (end) rg.mt
