Arab states press for speeding up UNSC reforms

NEW YORK, Feb 3 (KUNA) -- The Arab group of states at the United Nations said Wednesday the planned reforms of the Security Council must ensure a broader and equal representation based on the new realties in the world.
The accelerated global developments make the Arab group more determined to press for overhauling the UNSC in order to make it better able to fulfil its mandate in maintaining peace and security, Kuwait's acting head of the permanent mission to the UN Abdulaziz Al-Saud Al-Jarallah said.
He was speaking on behalf of the group at an intergovernmental debate on the UNSC reform process during the 70th session of the UN General Assembly.
He reiterated the demand of the Arab countries for a permanent seat at the Council in addition to an appropriate representation at the non-permanent membership.
The international community has to streamline the working methods of the UN body in a transparent, impartial and credible atmosphere, Al-Jarallah said, highlighting the importance of the current debate in reaching consensus on the expansion of the UNSC membership.
He voiced the concern of the Arab group over the increased encroachment by the Security Council on the powers of other UN bodies, particularly the General Assembly.
Al-Jarallah urged commitment to the provisions of the UN Charter specifying the jurisdiction of each UN agency.
He renewed the commitment of the Arab group to contribute effectively to the efforts meant to build consensus on the overhaul process. (end) mao.gb
