BAGHDAD, Jan 30 (KUNA) -- The Iraqi government Saturday called on the international coalition fighting so-called Islamic State to provide further military and economic support in the fight against IS, as current backing "does not match the challenges." Foreign Minister Ibrahim Jaafari, during a meeting with UN Special Representative to Iraq Jan Kubis, said the international support for Iraq should increase to help the country eliminate terrorism, help displaced and rebuild infrastructure destroyed by IS.
Jaafari acknowledged the regional and international support for Iraq's war against terrorism, but "it does not match the challenges" the country was facing, a ministry statement said.
He said Iraq still needed humanitarian assistance, coupled with political, economic and security support.
Kubis said he would raise Iraq's needs during a meeting of the international coalition against IS, due in Rome, Italy, next Tuesday.
he said the UN would call on the whole world to support Iraq against the threats posed by IS.
UN Security Council Resolution 2249, which was adopted late last year, said IS posed an unprecedented international threat, and its acts of terror were undermining international peace and security, and should be fought by all means. (end) ahh.bs
