Gov't mulling alternatives for reining in budgetary expenditures - Min.

KUWAIT, Jan 26 (KUNA) -- The government is currently immersed in studying alternative economic approaches to dealing with reining in national budgetary expenditure, said Tuesday Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Acting Minister of Electricity and Water Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah.
The government is looking at re-pricing such commodities as electricity, water, and gasoline in such a way that it would curb their flagrant misuse by some, he said in a statement to reporters, on the sideline of a the 2nd international forum on dealing with life-endangering emergencies and how to deal with them promptly.
He said the government was very serious about balancing the budget in view of looming economic realities all over the world, noting that the government has already taken steps to trim down the economic perks that ministers and top administrators in the government enjoyed, including junkets.
He emphasized that in the event of deciding to raise prices of electricity or water, the government would first consult with the lawmakers on that and that the best way to deal with belt-tightening measures would be one in which both executive and legislative branches saw eye-to-eye.
On the forum he was attending today, he said it was being held to determine the proper use of technology, including IT, to deal with natural disasters and national emergencies of any kind.
