Sheikh Salman, UNESCO official discuss Kuwaiti heritage

KUWAIT, Dec 1 (KUNA) -- Minister of Information and Minister of State for Youth Affairs Sheikh Salman Sabah Al-Salem Al-Humoud Al-Sabah met with a UNESCO official Tuesday to discuss Kuwait's role as a member of the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee.
In a press statement, the Ministry of Information said that Sheikh Salman and Director of the Division for Heritage and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Mechtild Rossler reviewed ways to implement guidelines set by the World Heritage Convention, which dictates what kind of cultural sites are eligible for inscription on the World Heritage List.
Moreover, Sheikh Salman underscored the significance of heritage in ensuring continued development and prosperity, adding that Kuwait is steadfast in its support of UNESCO and its contributions to the international community.
Rossler extolled Kuwaiti efforts of organizing a regional conference on the theme of urban conservation and safeguarding the heritage of urban and architectural sites in the Arab World. The conference, which commenced Tuesday, goes on until December 3rd.
The Director of the Division for Heritage also lauded Kuwait for steps taken to conserve its rich heritage.
Founded in 1945, UNESCO aims to contribute to peace and security by promoting international unity and cooperation. (end) nfa.nam
