Hollande calls for cooperation with Turkey to resolve Syrian, refugee crises

BRUSSELS, Nov 29 (KUNA) -- French President Francois Hollande said Sunday that Syrian refugees should be able to be welcomed either in Turkey or closer to their home country.
"Europe should help Turkey and Turkey should commit to control its borders. It should be in everybody's interest. Turkey would receive European resources, and Europe would not have to receive a larger number of refugees," he told reporters ahead of an special EU-Turkey summit to tackle the migrant crisis.
"We need to cooperate with Turkey in the fight against (human) trafficking, in the fight against terrorism, and in pursuing a solution to the Syrian conflict. It is in this spirit that I join this meeting," he added.
On his part, British prime Ministers David Cameron said "this summit matters because we need a comprehensive solution to the migrant crisis in Europe and obviously that involves Turkey." Britain will continue to support Syrian refugees in the refugee camps and in Turkey, he said and added that "in terms of the discussions this afternoon a lot of it will be about the Schengen no border zone that we are not a member of.
"Britain in the European Union will keep our border controls. It is vital to our security that they are," he noted. (pickup previous) nk.bs
