Russia imposes economic sanctions on Turkey over jet downing

MOSCOW, Nov 28 (KUNA) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Saturday several economic and trade sanctions on Turkey in retaliation for the downing of a Russian jetfighter near the Syrian border on Tuesday.
The package of sanctions, published on the Kremlin website, include banning the importation of certain goods from Turkey and contracting with Turkish firms for providing services inside Russia, and suspending visa-free travel of Turks to Russia.
The Russian government has also been issued instructions to take measures to introduce a ban on charter flights between Russia and Turkey; to enhance control over the activity of Turkish trucking companies on the Russian territory; to enhance control at ports and ensure the transportation safety of Russian seaports in the Azov-Black Sea area.
Russian officials had warned for days that Moscow would strike back for Tuesday's shooting-down by Turkish forces which left one of the Russian pilots dead after he was fired at by Syrian rebels as he parachuted to the ground.
Turkey says the Russian warplane violated its airspace while Moscow says the Su-24 bomber never left Syria. (end) as.ibi
