Bahraini Foreign Ministry summons Iranian diplomat over recent remarks

MANAMA, Nov 28 (KUNA) -- The Bahraini Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned on Saturday Iranian Embassy's Acting Charge d'Affaires Hameed Shafe'e Zad following the statements recently made by the Supreme Leader of the Iranian Revolution Ali Khamenei.
The Ministry's Undersecretary Abdullah Abdullatif Abdullah handed the Iranian diplomat a protest note, affirming that these statements were a blatant interference in internal affairs of Bahrain, according to a statement by Ministry.
The hostile statements constitute an unacceptable infringement on the sovereignty and independence of, and are also far from reality in, the Kingdom of Bahrain; they only reflect the ulterior motives of the Iranian policy based on sectarianism and discrimination.
The undersecretary called on Iran to stop making such comments that bear a clear incitement and foment discord and tensions in the region, the statement said, referring to Khamenei's statement in which he reportedly said Tehran would support what he considered as the "oppressed people" in the country.
Abdullah also called on Iran to focus, instead, on improving the conditions of the Iranian people.
He stressed the need of commitment to the principles of the UN and the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), relating to respect for sovereignty and independence of, and non-interference in the domestic affairs of, other nations. (end) mge.gb
