Int'l press body launches fund for Yemeni journalists

BRUSSELS, Nov 5 (KUNA) -- The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) launched Thursday a Solidarity Fund to provide financial aid and humanitarian assistance to Yemeni journalists and their families, who are in desperate need for help. An IFJ statement noted that so far ten journalists have been killed in 2015 in Yemen and 16 remain held captive, mostly by Houthi rebels.
Following the Houthis' occupation of media houses in capital Sana'a, most reporters have been forced to flee the city, it said. The IFJ is therefore inviting journalists, private individuals and organisations to show their solidarity by contributing to this appeal as generously as they can.
Yemen is one of the four countries the IFJ has targeted this year within its #endimpunity of crimes against journalists' campaign. Besides, the Federation has launched a specific campaign concerning press freedom and safety in the country. The Brussels-based IFJ represents around 600,000 journalists in 179 unions and associations across 139 countries worldwide. (end) nk.ajs
