IPU pres. stresses key role of MPs in addressing migration issues

GENEVA, Oct 18 (KUNA) -- Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Saber Hossain Chowdhury stressed here on Sunday the important roles of lawmakers in dealing with the issues of migrations and problems facing migrants.
In a speech during the 133rd session of the IPU, Chowdary said that MPS are dealing with migration issues through several regional and national axes, and working on combating poverty in accordance with a roadmap in line with available possibilities and resources.
He underlined the need to concerted efforts of MPs and their independence in taking decisions, referring to their role in communicating with youth and encouraging them to deal with academic mechanisms that serve sustainable development to combat poverty.
On his part, Director General of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) William Swing urged parliamentarians to deal with migration as an important phenomenon in a world where chaos is prevailing due to the gap between the North and the South and changes at markets in terms of supply and demand for manpower.
He said the migrants to the coasts of Europe are coming from various parts of the earth, like the Himalayas and Africa, and the victims of the incidents of Syria and natural disasters.
He urged MPs to pay more attention to the issues of migrants and refugees, and to combat hatred of foreigners as well as to promote integrating migrants inside the societies where they live.
Meanwhile, General Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Guy Ryder referred to the migration of manpower that witnesses a contradiction between moral and political interests on one hand and national interests and policies of maintaining identity on the other hand.
He called on MPs to play key roles in combating extremism and addressing problems facing migrants who are blackmailed by recruiters. (Pick up previous) ta.hm
