Sudan insists on UNAMID exit from Darfur

KHARTOUM, Oct 14 (KUNA) -- The Sudanese government renewed on Wednesday its call for phasing out the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID).
During his meeting with the ambassadors to Sudan of the permanent members of the UN Security Council - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States, Undersecretary of the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abdul-Ghani Al-Nayiem raised the demand for UNAMID exit from the western region.
The meeting reviewed issues relating to the UNAMID operations and the administrative problems facing the mission, Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ali Al-Sadeq told reporters here.
The UN Security Council adopted on June 29 a resolution to extend the mandate of UNAMID for another year.
The resolution included Sudan's demand for the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on December 15, 2014, to work out an exit strategy for UNAMID.
The 26,000-strong mission, first deployed in Darfur in 2008, was tasked with stabilizing the region, put an end to the violence which continued since 2003, and oversee the implementation of the peace accords between the Sudanese government and rebel movements, including the Doha peace accord.
