IPU chief hails Kuwait's democracy

KUWAIT, Oct 13 (KUNA) -- Martin Chungong, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), on Tuesday hailed as robust and successful the democratic experience in Kuwait.
Emerging from a meeting with Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, State Minister for Planning and Development, Hind Al-Sebeeh, the IPU chief said the Kuwaiti National Assembly (Parliament) bears enormous responsibilities with respect of boosting democracy in the country. He expressed hope the Kuwaiti woman would be able to play a greater role in politics, noting that women in the country constitute 52 percent of eligible voters in parliamentary elections.
He affirmed that his current visit to the country aims at holding talks with the leaders on the women political engagement.
On his talks with Minister Al-Sebeeh, Chungong said the discussions dealt with cooperation among the country's civil associations, legislative and executive authorities.
Minister Al-Sabeeh affirmed that the Kuwaiti woman is able of involvement in politics successfully, indicating that they had proved their capacities in this respect in the past. (end) mz.tb.rk
