UNSC welcomes proposed names of Libya Gov't

NEW YORK, Oct 10 (KUNA) -- UN Security Council welcomed the announcement of the proposed names for the Presidency Council of the Libyan Government of National Accord.
The names that were announced earlier by UN Special Representative Bernardino Leon in Skhirat.
In a statement, the members of the Security Council commended the dialogue participants on finalizing the Political Agreement for the Government of National Accord after comprehensive and broad consultations, which represented a genuine opportunity for the parties to resolve Libya's political, security and institutional crises.
The UNSC led by Spain this month, called on all Libyans, representatives of the people, political parties, municipalities and civil society, to "unite wholeheartedly and in a spirit of reconciliation behind this settlement, which represents the aspirations and hopes of the Libyan people." The members of the Security Council urged all Libyan parties to endorse and sign the Political Agreement, and to work together to quickly form the Government of National Accord, the statement added.
They also thanked Leon and his team for their efforts in this United Nations-facilitated, Libyan-led dialogue process, and expressed their gratitude to those Member States that facilitated the dialogue, in particular the Kingdom of Morocco for its efforts in advancing the agreement, including through hosting the Libyan dialogue.
The 15-member body encouraged in their statement, the UNSMIL to advance relevant efforts for co-ordination of international assistance to the future Government of National Accord. Reaffirming strong commitment to the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of Libya, the UNSC recalled resolutions 2174, 2213 and 2214, and noted that "the Sanctions Committee is prepared to sanction those who threaten Libya's peace, stability and security or that undermine the successful completion of its political transition." At their meeting today, the members (minus Venezuela) adopted resolution 2240 condemning all acts of migrant smuggling and human trafficking too, through and from the Libyan territory and off the coasts of Libya.
The resolution that was drafted by the UK, also deplored the continuing maritime tragedies in the Mediterranean Sea that have resulted in hundreds of casualties, authorizes Member States acting nationally or through regional organizations to "use all measures commensurate to the specific circumstances in confronting migrant smugglers or human traffickers in carrying out activities under paragraphs 7 and 8 and in full compliance with international human rights law."(end) mao.gta
