Today in Kuwait's History

KUWAIT, Oct 10 (KUNA) -- 1920 -- Battle of Jahra took place during the era of Sheikh Salem Al-Mubarak, the ninth ruler of Kuwait. It was a landmark battle in Kuwait's modern history, during which Sheikh Salem valiantly defended all Kuwaiti territories when a tribal Ikhwan army of 4,000 fighters attacked Jahra while there were only 1,500 Kuwaiti fighters. The battle took place at the Red Palace (Al-Qasr Al-Ahmar), which now stands as a source of heroism and martyrdom for the sake of homeland. The Kuwaiti fighters were led by Sheikh Salem. When many boats carrying ammunition, food and fighters were sent to Jahra, the Ikhwan army dispatched a negotiating team for a bilateral truce before they fled Jahra.
1955 -- His Highness the late Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah issued income tax Decree no. 3/1955 which imposed taxes on trade agencies in Kuwait.
1961 -- An Arab theaterical troupe was established. It remained under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Social Affairs until 1964. It was the first theaterical group which was joined by Kuwaiti actresses. The group won several prizes for theater creativity. It performed its maiden play in March 1962.
1979 -- His Highness late Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah issued decree no. 65/1979 on public meetings and gatherings. It stipulated that a public gathering of over 20 people should get permission, excluding religious ceremonies or state meetings.
1994 -- The National Assembly (parliament) held an extraordinary session on Iraqi threats and military buildup against Kuwait, and issued a statement aimed at boosting the morale of armed forces of Kuwait and the Kuwaiti people.
2010 -- Kuwaiti swimmers won three gold medals in an international swimming tournament held in Brazil.
2011 -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah opened 10th Asian Cooperation Dialogue Forum.
2013 -- Qadsiya sports club won against Egypt's Alexandria team by 64-54 in int'l Basketball tournament. (end) gta
