Basra city reports 45 cholera cases

BASRA, Iraq, Oct 9 (KUNA) -- Forty five infections with the cholera disease were registered in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, Health officials said Friday.
So far, 45 cases of cholera infections were confirmed, and health officials continue to inspect and test patients in addition to increasing a campaign of awareness regarding the disease, Riyadh Al-Amir Health department director in Basra told KUNA.
Earlier, the Iraqi health ministry reported that the number of confirmed cholera cases has reached 1,263 in all of Iraqi provinces.
Last night, two people, one in Babel (Babylon) and another in Baghdad, died as a result of their infection with cholera.
The outbreak of this fatal disease this year comes as the most serious in comparison with the previous five year period. (end) ahh.mb
