Syrian armed groups launch counterattack in Hama amid Russian airstrikes

AMMAN, Oct 8 (KUNA) -- As the Russian warplanes launched nearly 40 air attacks on the positions of the Syrian opposition groups in Hama and Idlib governorates, the armed groups launched a massive counterattack in Morek town, to the north of Hama city, on Wednesday.
The Russian airstrikes killed five civilians, including a boy, in Kafr Zita village, northwest Hama, while four others were killed in similar attacks on the rural outskirts of Maarat al-Numaan, north Idlib city, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported.
The air attacks coincided with fierce clashes between the Syrian troops and pro-regime militias, on one hand, and the armed opposition groups on the other.
The armed groups, including the Islamist groups, launched a massive attack on the camps of the regular troops in Morek town, which have reportedly inflicted heavy human and material damage on the regime.
The armed groups, using supplies from Hama, beefed up their positions before attacking the regime-held town; they managed to destroy at least eight tanks and military vehicles of the regime, according to SOHR report.
The ongoing battles claimed dozens of lives on both sides, the report added. (end) tk.gb
