Int'l Anti-Corruption Conference concludes with key recommendations

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 5 (KUNA) -- Participants in the 16th International Anti-Corruption Conference which concluded Friday night, issued a number of recommendations to ensure integrity and end corruption through lifting impunity off those charged with corruption crimes.
The conference held in Putrajaya Malaysia under the theme "Ending Impunity: People. Integrity. Action", also saw discussion on the importance of retrieving stolen assets and measures to prevent the corrupt from enjoying their illicit wealth or find safe haven.
Meanwhile, the participants also recommended that those involved must not be allowed to use diplomatic passports and investor's visa programs to avoid justice.
Moreover, they called on countries to impose travel restrictions on individuals suspected of corruption. The action is aimed at preventing suspects from easily travelling to expand their illegal activities, as well as buy luxury goods and real estate.
The participants also demanded that bankers, lawyers, accountants and real estate agents who allow the movement of illicit funds across borders must be punished.
The recommendations also included preventing the corrupt from using secret companies to hide their wealth, a call for banks to comply with anti-money laundering laws, developing the anti-money laundering legal framework to ensure more robust control and punishment, allowing citizens to take part in decision making and create a fair competition in business.
Over 1000 officials of 138 countries including Kuwait are participating in the event held every two years. The conference is held in cooperation with the Malaysian government, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), and the Malaysian Society for Transparency and Integrity.(end) mam.ag
