Moroccans vote in 1st local, regional elections under new constitution

RABAT, Sept 4 (KUNA) -- Moroccans are casting their vote on Friday in the first local elections under the new constitution, issued in 2011.
Some 14.5 million people are eligible to choose from 131,000 candidates, representing 29 political parties, in addition to independent ones. They are competing for 32,000 seats on local, and 8,000 on regional ones.
The government has taken a host of measures to encourage people to take part in the vote, aiming to raise turnout over the 37 percent average recorded in previous local polls, amid a usual refrain from voting in big cities and among the elite.
Up to 34 local and six international bodies are monitoring the elections, besides the Morocco Human Rights Council.
Initial results are expected late Friday night.
Voting centers opened their doors at eight, local time (GMT 0700), according to the Interior Ministry. (end) adt.msa
