S. Korea, N. Korea to discuss families reunion program

SEOUL, Aug 28 (KUNA) -- The South Korean Red Cross called on its North counterpart to hold talks on reuniting families separated by the 1950-1953 war.
The South's Red Cross suggested September seventh as the date for holding talks aiming to arrange for the families reunion in the border truce village of Panmunjom, said spokesman of the South Korean Ministry of Unification on Friday.
The reunion is part of the historical truce agreed upon by the two Koreas last Tuesday after marathon negotiations. The truce also includes paving the way for reconciliation and defuse escalating military tension that had prevailed in the past days.
The number of family members separated at the borders of the two states totaled 129,698 at the end of the korean War. According to the ministry's statistics, there are 66,292 people of those still alive with 54.3 percent of them being over 80 years of age.(end) anj.ag
