CAIRO, Aug 5 (KUNA) -- Secretary General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Al-Araby stressed the need of providing international protection to the Palestinian people under the current deterioration of the situations in the occupied territories.
"The Arab group of states at the United Nations has to work out a draft UN Security Council resolution to condemn the terrorist crimes being perpetrated by Jewish extremists against the Palestinians and the Security Council has to shoulder its responsibility in this regard," Al-Arab said.
He made the comments during a ministerial meeting by the committee on the Arab peace initiative here Wednesday evening.
"What is needed is not a limited protection that could be provided by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC); it's rather a genuine one with a binding mandate from the UN Security Council," the league chief made clear.
The political scene in the Middle East is rife with crises, violence and turmoil, and there are almost no prospects for political settlement, he said, adding that the Palestinian cause will remain the core of all problems in the region.
Al-Araby also urged the Arab countries to meet their financial obligations to the UNRWA in order to enable the UN agency meet the needs of the Palestinians in the occupied territories and the refugees in the region.
He commended the efforts made by Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah during his tenure as chairman of the committee on the Arab peace initiative. (end) mfm.rg.gb
