EU gives 12 mln euro in new aid for crisis in Yemen

BRUSSELS, Aug 5 (KUNA) -- The European Commission announced Wednesday that it is increasing its humanitarian aid by 12 million euro for people affected by the crisis in Yemen.
Out of the 12 million euro, 10 million euro will be used to provide for nutrition, food, health, water, sanitation, shelter, emergency household supplies and protection to the vulnerable people in Yemen, said the EU's executive body in a statement.
One million euro each for Djibouti and Somalia will go towards helping thousands of refugees and returnees fleeing from Yemen to countries of the Horn of Africa.
Christos Stylianides, EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, commented that "the humanitarian crisis in Yemen is reaching catastrophic proportions with 80 percent of the population now in need of assistance." "Humanitarian pauses are vital to enable humanitarian workers and organisations deliver much needed aid. These pauses must be granted unconditionally by all the parties to the conflict.
