Obama, Ban discuss Syria, Yemen, Libya, South Sudan, climate change

WASHINGTON, Aug 4 (KUNA) -- In an Oval Office appearance on Tuesday after meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, President Barack Obama said the two discussed climate change, Syria, the need to end the conflict in Yemen and "modest progress" in Libya.
They also discussed South Sudan and how to give the United Nations more support, Obama said.
The United States wants to make the most of the September UN meetings, including on countering violent extremism, the President said.
Ban praised Obama for the agreement aimed at limiting the Iranian nuclear program, the US policy change toward Cuba as well as Obama's just-concluded trip to Africa, describing them as "historic diplomatic achievements." He also congratulated Obama for "visionary leadership" for the President's climate change proposal on US power plants, saying the carbon limits could achieve "huge dividends".
On Yemen, Ban said there was no military solution.
He said Obama's visit to Africa and South Sudan meetings "really made a big difference." (end) rm.ibi
