US condemns attack on top Burundi general

WASHINGTON, Aug 3 (KUNA) -- The United States has condemned the attack in Burundi's capital Bujumbura which killed General Adolphe Nshimirimana, a senior figure considered to be President Pierre Nkurunziza's right hand.
The attack also killed three of his bodyguards as the car came under fire. The attack followed Nkurunziza's re-election for a third term in office.
The US Administration "urges calm and restraint in the aftermath of the attack", and calls on "all sides to renounce violence and to redouble their efforts to engage in a transparent, inclusive, and comprehensive political dialogue", said State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner, in a statement late on Sunday.
"The path forward must address foundational issues, including respect for human rights, freedom of the press and other fundamental freedoms, and respect for the Arusha Agreement and its power-sharing provisions. Restoration of dialogue is urgent, and all parties must work together in pursuit of a consensus, peaceful path forward for the people of Burundi", he added. (end) ys.ag
