Iran not after weapons of mass destruction - Rouhani

TEHRAN, Aug 3 (KUNA) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani confirmed late Sunday that his country is not after weapons of mass destruction, describing claims charging Iran of producing a nuclear bomb as "speculation and delusion", official media reported Sunday.
"Radioactive contamination of some of Iran's nuclear equipment, which later turned out to be because of using second-hand machines, had resulted in the misconception that Iran had a suspicious military purpose in its nuclear project," Rouhani said in a televised interview, according to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
He explained that the equipment Iran had purchased from a third country was wrapped in brand new packages, adding that they were found later to be used ones and it became a source of suspicion.
Meanwhile, Rouhani said that the UN Security Council resolution 2231, adopted last July in the wake of nuclear agreement, will not create a national security problem.
He also expressed confidence that his country will mark success at the economic arena in the post-sanctions era, noting that achievements Iran secured by negotiations and the nuclear agreement with P5+1 group of world powers was more than what it had initially expected to gain.
"The deal has opened the doors to foreign technology and capital and will facilitate Iran's exports after sanctions are lifted," said the Iranian President. (end) mw.ma
