USD 21 mln food assistance arrived in Yemen - USAID

WASHINGTON, July 31 (KUNA) -- The US Agency for International Development (USAID) announced on Friday that USD 21 million in emergency food assistance arrived in Yemen.
"This was a wheat shipment totaling 35,800 tons, enough to feed more than one million people for two months, that will now be milled into flour and distributed through the UN World Food Programme to the most vulnerable families throughout Yemen," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters.
This is the largest humanitarian shipment since the conflict began. Since the 2014 fiscal year the US government has provided USD 188 million humanitarian assistance to Yemen, Toner noted.
"We continue, obviously, to call on all parties involved in the conflict in Yemen to allow for the unimpeded entry and for the delivery of essential food items to civilian populations," he reiterated. (end) ak.bs
