Shell to cut 6,500 jobs

BRUSSELS, July 30 (KUNA) -- The Anglo-Dutch energy giant Shell will cut 6,500 jobs this year due to a drop in oil prices, Dutch media reported Thursday.
"Today's oil price downturn could last for several years, and Shell's planning assumptions reflect today's market realities," the media quoted Shell chief executive Ben van Beurden as saying.
"The company has to be resilient in today's oil price environment, even though we see the potential for a return to a USD 70-90 oil price band in the medium term," he said.
Shell's second quarter 2015 earnings were USD 3.4 billion compared with USD 5.1 billion for the same quarter last year on a current cost of supplies basis.
Shell has a workforce of some 94,000 around the globe. (end) nk.bs
