BRUSSELS, July 28 (KUNA) -- The North Atlantic Council, which includes the ambassadors of all the 28 NATO countries, began a meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Tuesday after a request by Turkey following recent terrorist attacks on its territory, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said ahead of the meeting.
He noted that under article four of the Washington Treaty of NATO, any Ally can request consultations whenever, in the opinion of any of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened.
"Turkey requested the meeting in view of the serious security situation. Terrorism in all its form can never be tolerated or justified. It is right and timely that we hold this meeting today to address the instability on Turkey's doorstep and on NATO's border," he said.
NATO is following developments very closely and stands in strong solidarity with our ally Turkey, he added. (end) nk.gta
