S. Korea declares end of Mers

SEOUL, July 28 (KUNA) -- South Korea on Tuesday, had declared an end to the deadly outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory System (mers) which killed 36 patients out of 186 since May 21st, 2015.
The announcement was made by Korean Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn after 23 days without discovering new cases in the country. Moreover, the last of the quarantined patients was released on Monday.
"After weighing various circumstances, the medical personnel and the government judge that the people can now be free from worry" Hwang was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency.
"I ask the public to shake off all concerns over Mers and to resume normal daily activities, including economic, cultural, leisure and school activities", he added.
Meanwhile, Hwang apologized for South Korea's delay to effectively deal with the virus upon its outbreak. The government's weak initial response to the disease was met by strong criticism, leading the Minister of Health and Welfare to resign and take full responsibility for the case.
Earlier this month, the Bank of Korea (BOK) cut its 2015 economic growth forecast for the third time this year, from 3.1 percent growth to 2.8 percent. Citing sluggish exports and weak domestic consumption due to the coronavirus, as bank has kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at a record low of 1.5 percent.
The outbreak had strongly affected South Korea's economy and tourism sector, while local business including cinemas, restaurants and shopping malls reported a sharp drop in sales.
Last Friday, South Korea's National Assembly had approved USD 9.9 billion to reform the country's economy and as compensations to infected people, hospitals and companies. (end) anj.ag
