EU says Pakistan's role important to promote regional co-op

BRUSSELS, July 20 (KUNA) -- Pakistan has a significant role to play in advancing political, economic and trade relations in the region, which can contribute to growth, stability and peace in Central and South Asia, the EU foreign affairs council said in a statement here Monday.
The Council which is meeting in Brussels welcomed Pakistan's hosting of the next 'Heart of Asia' Ministerial meeting in Islamabad later this year and the positive steps taken to engage constructively with the Government of Afghanistan. Furthermore, the EU called on Pakistan to actively contribute to international efforts in the field of nuclear security, non-proliferation and disarmament.
The Council said it recognises the sacrifice that Pakistan has made in combatting terrorism and urged Pakistan to build on the steps it has taken to prevent and fight terrorism and counter violent extremism, curb financing of terrorist organisations, enforce the ban on proscribed organisations, take effective steps against religious persecution, and register and regulate madrassas.
In a separate statement, the EU welcomed the outreach by the Afghan leadership to countries in the region to increase cooperation in facilitating an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process as a foundation for peace and stability in both Afghanistan and the region. The Council called on all countries in the region to support an inclusive settlement in Afghanistan.
In another statement, the Council welcomed the signature on 15 May and 20 June by all parties of the Mali Peace Agreement as an important milestone on the road to peace and stability in Mali and the wider Sahel Region.
The Agreement is a crucial step in restoring peace, stability and security, helping to improve the living conditions of the population, and rebuilding mutual trust that will promote national reconciliation, it added.(end) nk.ibi
