Arab League holds closed session on recent Palestinian developments

CAIRO, July 2 (KUNA) -- The Arab League Council held a closed session Thursday on recent developments regarding the Palestinian cause.
The closed session was held following an extraordinary meeting held earlier at the level of permanent delegates.
The delegates reviewed outcomes of the ministerial quartet committee meeting with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius to request a resolution from the UNSC regarding the Palestinian cause, Ambassador Mohammad Sabih, Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Palestine's Affairs said in a press statement.
Sabih expressed Arab League's welcome of any effort related to the Arab peace initiative, which is "a compass for the strategic Arab movement", noting that there were inquiries by the Arab side on several points indicated by Fabius during the meeting.
The French ideas pose several steps that include returning to negotiations and forming an international committee for negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis, he said, adding that France suggests 18 months as time duration for these negotiations.
France also suggests that this committee should be formed by permanent members from UNSC and some Arab countries, in addition to Secretaries General of Arab League, UN and EU in order to perform its role in pushing negotiations forward, unlike the international quartet committee which was only limited to statements, Sabih noted.
