US drone strike kills 14 rebels in E. Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, July 1 (KUNA) -- At least fourteen insurgents were killed in a United States-led drone strike in Afghanistan's eastern Nangarhar province, said an official on Wednesday.
Provincial police spokesman, Col. Hazrat Hussain Mashraqiwal in a statement said that a drone targeted two residential buildings in the Lal Pur district of the province, situated over 150 kilometers east of the capital, Kabul.
He confirmed that at least fourteen insurgents were killed in the drone strike, adding that the assault targeted a group of Taliban militants.
Earlier on June 28, at least five Taliban rebels including a local commander were killed in a US drone strike in eastern Nuristan province of Afghanistan.
The drone strike came at a time when Taliban rebels have paced up their activities across Afghanistan following the launch of annual warm weather offensive in April after NATO/ISAF forces left the country at the end of last year. (end) sbk.mt
