Suicide attack kills, wounds 53 in S. Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, June 30, (KUNA) -- At least two people were killed and 51 others including two policemen wounded in a suicide attack targeting a police station in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province on Tuesday, said officials.
Provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Nabi Jan Mulakhail in a statement said, "A suicide bomber hit his car to the back wall of police station and two others wanted to enter to the police station to attack me." He further said that the plan was foiled when the cemented wall did not fall down and the remaining two suicide bombers got panicked, adding that one of the suicide bombers went off the other car while the other ran away from the scene, to be killed later by police.
He confirmed that two civilians were killed and 51 others wounded in the attack on police station in Lashkargah, the provincial capital of Helmand.
The governor's spokesman, Omar Zwak confirming the casualties said that dozens of children and women wounded inside homes where as few pedestrians and shopkeepers nearby the incident also sustained injuries.
The suicide attack came at a time Taliban rebels have paced up their attacks across Afghanistan following the launch of annual warm weather offensive in April against the security forces. (end) sbk.ibi
