IRBIL, June 6 (KUNA) -- Iraq's Kurdistan President Masoud Barzani on Saturday commended Kuwait's opening of a consulate in Irbil as a step that would certainly contribute to promoting bilateral relations.
Barzani was quoted by a presidential statement as saying following talks with Kuwait's General Consul in Irbil Omar Al-Kandari that they had discussed ways of developing cooperative relations between Kuwait and Kurdistan as well as the latest regional developments amid looming "terrorist threats".
Barzani reaffirmed that Iraq's Kurdistan would never be part of "communal conflicts" in the region.
For his part, the Kuwaiti consul hailed the role played by Kurdistan in the ongoing fight against terrorism and in hosting a large number of refugees and internally displaced persons.
He said he had conveyed during the meeting greetings from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Iraq's Kurdistan government.
He added that the opening of the Kuwaiti consulate in Irbil would be a launching point for closer ties between both sides in all fields. (end) sbr.mt
