TOKYO, May 30 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait Embassy in Tokyo confirmed the safety of all Kuwaiti citizens in Japan following a 8.5-magnitude earthquake that struck the Tokyo Metropolitan area.

The quake jolted eastern Japan, including Tokyo, at 8:24 p.m. (1124 GMT), the Japan Meteorological Agency said. According to police, there were several injuries, but no reports of deaths or serious damage. No tsunami warning was issued.
The government set up a response team at its crisis management center of the prime minister's office to gather information about the situation.
Operators of nuclear power plants in the affected areas said there were no signs of abnormalities at the facilities from the quake. Tokyo's Haneda airport was temporary closed for runway inspection but services but resumed afterwards.

The focus of the tremor was 590 km underground near the Ogasawara Island, about 1,000 km off Tokyo, according to the agency.
