11 policemen, two others killed in road accident in Egypt

CAIRO, May 30 (KUNA) -- At least 13 people, including 11 policemen, were killed in a road accident between a police vehicle and a truck in Beni Suef governorate, south of Cairo, according to security sources.
The accident occurred late Friday along a stretch of road in Beni Suef about 100 kilometres (62 miles) from Cairo, the official Middle Esat News Agency (MENA) reported, citing Mohammad Abu Taleb, head of security directorate in the governorate on Saturday.
The vehicle, which was carrying security personnel, crashed into the truck, sending the two vehicles into a roadside canal, said medics and Abu Taleb.
Fatal road accidents are relatively common in Egypt and have often been blamed on poor driving and bad roads.
More than 12,000 people die and 50,000 others are injured in road accidents in Egypt every year, according to recent WHO statistics. (end) rgh.nbs.hm
