India's heat wave death toll crosses 2,000 mark

NEW DELHI May 30 (KUNA) -- Death toll from the heat wave hitting various parts of India has crossed 2,000-people mark as Palamau in East Indian state of Jharkhand recorded the highest temperature at 47 degrees Celsius.
Majority of deaths were reported from two south Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as the total number of causalities from the two states stood at 1,979.
Authorities in Andhra Pradesh said that since Thursday, the heat waves have claimed 156 lives while Telangana registered 49 deaths. The Special Relief Commissioner's office in the state of Odisha confirmed 17 heat related deaths and it is investigating the remaining death cases of a total 108 reported so far.
State authorities of Gujarat said seven lives were lost due to the scorching heat, while New Delhi reported two causalities. Many Indian states including New Delhi, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan are under the grip of high temperature.
The capital New Delhi recorded 42 degrees Celsius on Friday, while Punjab and Haryana also witnessed temperature touching 44 degrees Celsius. (end) atk.hb
