Saudi Arabia's Grand Mufti says Qatif mosque attack to "incite discord"

RIYADH, May 22 (KUNA) -- The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Al-Sheikh said an explosion that hit a mosque in the eastern governorate of Al-Qatif on Friday was "a dangerous crime aimed at inciting discord and divide the people." The explosion that targetted a mosque in the town of Al-Qediah in Al-Qatif "is a criminal and deliberate incident, and the perpetrators aim to create a division among the people of the country, spread hostility and discord in this critical circumstance," Al Al-Sheikh said in a statement, cited by Al-Ekhbariya TV channel.
The attack, he said, came at a time Saudi Arabia was defending its southern borders with Yemen.
The Grand Mufti called on the people to unite behind the Saudi leadership.
The interior ministry said earlier a suicide bomber blew up his explosive belt at the mosque in Al-Qediah killing and injuring several people.
Al-Azhar religious institute in Cairo also condemned the "terrorist explosion" against the mosque in Al-Qediah.
President of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb rejected all attacks against the mosques and sacred places. (pickup previous) yms.esm.bs
