CAIRO, May 22 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Dr. Nabil Al-Araby called the international community, particularly UN Security Council (UNSC), to move quickly and take whatever measures necessary in order to save the ancient city of Palmyra, aka Tadmur, from the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).
ISIL's control over the historic city poses a dangerous threat to one of the most important archaeological and cultural sites in the world, Al-Araby said in a statement Friday, calling on all UN international bodies to provide necessary protection for the city from possible looting and vandalism acts by ISIL combatants.
He also expressed grave concern over the volume of damage that ISIL caused Palmyra, included within the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) world heritage list, noting that international treaties and laws impose necessary commitment to protect and preserve such sites during wartimes.
