Mogherini to brief UNSC on illegal migration

BRUSSELS, May 6 (KUNA) -- EU High Representative Federica Mogherini has been invited to brief the UN Security Council on Monday May 11 on the migration situation in the Mediterranean.
This comes after a series of high level contacts led by Mogherini with the EU Members of the UN Security Council, the US, Russia, and China to exchange views and coordinate positions on the fight against trafficking organisations, said a statement released here today by her office.
The EU foreign policy chief also discussed with the African Union and Arab countries the need to work in partnership to address the root causes of illegal migration, tackle emergency situations and prevent criminal organisations from operating against vulnerable people.
Mogherini will brief the UNSC by video-conference.
Hundreds of migrants mainly from Africa have drowned in recent weeks off Libya and thousands have been rescued by the Italian navy in the Mediterranean. (end) nk.tg
