BLANTYRE, Malawi, May 6 (KUNA) -- A team from the African Continent Committee of the Society of the Revival of Islamic Heritage (RIHS) continued the third round of delivery of urgent aid to the flood-stricken regions in Malawi on Wednesday.
About 50 tons of foodstuffs were delivered to 800 families in the regions affected by the floods that swept the country last January that left about 200,000 people homeless, Head of the society's Africa committee Jassim Al-Enati told KUNA.
Al-Enati praised the distribution operation in Malawi as well as the aid offered by Kuwait to victims of the recent floods.
For their parts, Malawi governors praised the Kuwaiti aid, stressing that their people were in dire need of this assistance, adding that Kuwait's Islamic Heritage Revival Society was the first among international organizations to rush in the provision of urgent relief supplies to the regions.
Malawi, a very poor nation, witnessed ravaging floods in January that claimed thousands of lives, wounded thousands of people and left more than 200,000 others homeless.
The ferocious waters swept away agricultural crops and houses. Due to swamps, diseases have spread among the residents.
The African Continent Committee is a humanitarian relief body, which has constantly sought to alleviate suffering of the poor in the African continent for more than 30 years. (end) ha.ss
